1 To the choirmaster. A psalm song of David.
2 It was created when the prophet Nathan came to him after David had slept with Bathsheba.[1]
3 God, be merciful to me according to your goodness / and blot out my transgressions, for you are full of mercy.
4 Wash away my sin from me; cleanse me from my iniquity!
5 Yes, I acknowledge my transgressions; / my sin is ever before me.
6 Against you, yes, especially against you, I have sinned; / I have done what is evil in your sight! / Therefore you are right in your judgment, / you stand pure as a judge.[2]
7 Yes, I came into the world in sin, / and in sin did my mother conceive me.
8 You rejoice when someone is completely upright. / So you teach me in secret to be wise.
9 Purify me with hyssop[3], and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
10 Let me hear joy again and restore my joy, / then the limbs that you have broken will rejoice.
11 Look no more at my sin / and wipe out all my guilt!
12 Create in me, O God, a pure heart / and give me a new, steadfast spirit!
13 Don't drive me away from you / and do not take your Holy Spirit from me!
14 Let the joy of your salvation return to me / and sustain me with a willing spirit!
15 I will teach your ways to those who have transgressed against you, / and sinners will return to you.
16 Take away my bloodguilt, O Lord, O God of my salvation! / Then I will sing of your righteousness.
17 Loosen my tongue, O Lord, that my mouth may declare your praise!
18 You do not delight in sacrifices; I would give them to you; / You do not care for burnt offerings.
19 The sacrifice that pleases God is a broken spirit. / For a broken and contrite heart you will not despise, O God.
20 Do good to Zion in your lovingkindness; / build up the walls of Jerusalem!
